    About

I am Yifan Fan, a designer and researcher working at the intersection of public placemaking, urban furniture, and interactive technology. My practice focuses on how technology, public art, and participation can reshape the way people experience shared spaces. I am drawn to projects that connect communities, spark curiosity, and bring warmth to everyday environments. Creating art has shown me how design can open conversations, strengthen relationships, and offer moments of reflection in public life. I formerly taught in the Department of Computer Graphics Technology at Purdue University, where I am pursuing my PhD, and my recent work includes community-centered public art collaborations such as Pearl of the Wabash in West Lafayette. I see art as a way to build meaningful connections, and I am committed to contributing to that dialogue through creative practice and education.

    Research Interests

My research investigates how data-driven design, interactive lighting, and community-centered visual communication can meaningfully shape public space. My work focuses on how people respond to dynamic environments and how spatial storytelling can foster social connection, safety, and belonging. These interests converge in Pearl of the Wabash, my large-scale interactive lighting installation developed in collaboration with the City of West Lafayette. Through behavioral observation, spatial analytics, and community interviews, I examines how evolving light-based interactions influence public engagement and collective use of space. Findings from this project are featured in my forthcoming article accepted for publication in Public Art Dialogue (2026). My broader research continues to explore how technology, craft, and human behavior can inform participatory public art and inclusive placemaking.
