    Student Health Clinic Redesign

Client Profile  /  University of Idaho Student Health & Moscow Family
Medicine UIdaho Moscow. ID Campus | Ash St. & University Driv

    Problem Statement

The primary problem area of the student health center is the lack of transparency in the space both physically, through materiality and placement of access to light, and spatially, through the overall layout and programming placement. The lack of natural lighting, in combination with fluorescent only artificial light makes the space feel sterile, hollow, and uninviting. In combination with lack of light, the material palette does not work for the space due to sterilization issues, audibility control, and overall cohesive aesthetic. Overall, the current space is comfortable, but does not provide the user with a sense of comfort which could be remedied with improved materiality, transparency towards nature, and reconfigured programming placement.

    • Entrance is not inviting and feels crowded. There is no wayfinding to aid the user in direction.

    • Colums block views and confuse wayfinding in the waiting area space.

    • Billing office is very small and employees do not have a comfortable work environment. Audibility issues surround the confidentiality of patient’s information.

    • Lack of natural light in the space. Little to no variation of artificial light, leaving the space feeling drab and too intense.

    • Inconsistent sizing of examination rooms and doctor offices

    Concept Statement

The student healthcare center offers a space which celebrate all of its users through illuminated circulation pathways and a refreshed material palette. The intent of the design is to incorporate transparency, connections to nature, and a direct attention to improving the levels of light, both natural and artificial within the space. The patient can seek prospect or refuge in the newly reconfifigured waiting area while encompassed in a space that provides access to nature and its powerful healing properties. The updated program placement acts as an enhancement of the current space, making the circulation clear and intent, as well as provide a sense of arrival into the space. The student health care center aims to provide its users with a brighter, warmer, and more comfortable atmosphere upon which they can grow stronger, healthier, and happier
